Black Tents of Balochistan
Education is a universal right, the key to empowerment, and the most important path to the alleviation of poverty. However, many parts of the world still have little to no access to education. CISD’s pilot educational project is located in Amori, Chajhi District, Pakistan. We are working with our sister organization Pen Foundation Balochistan (PFB) and the University of Balochistan, Balochi Studies. Our project features tents and buildings as sites for schoolrooms. This is to ensure continuous education for students whose nomadic and semi-nomadic lifestyles require seasonal migration. During March 2013 to November 2014, CISD plans to add two schools in the Mashkid region to its Black Tent projects. CISD has three schools operating in Amori, Gown Shiro, Salonk, and Hanjeer, which serve up to 310 students. They are comprised of boys and girls from the ages of 6 to 12. Even more children are on our waiting list, and it is our goal to bring them in as well. The students are mostly from tribes of the region that have been completely isolated from the outside world.
Teachers at the schools are from the local population, and teach in their mother tongues, Balochi and Brohvi. The University of Balochistan (Department of Balochi Studies) has been instrumental in training the teachers and developing curriculums. CISD also provides salaries for the teachers, as well as school supplies and lunches for the children. CISD seeks to expand this educational project, so we may give all children in Balochistan an opportunity to learn.
*The “Black Tents of Baluchistan” project was inspired by the book written by the notable anthropologist, Dr. Carl Salzman, which is also entitled “The Black tents of Baluchistan” (Smithsonian Institute, 2000). His book was the culmination of almost three years in the nomadic region of Baluchistan studying and conducting research.
